Dental Fillings For Children
Traditional dental restoratives (fillings) include resins and amalgams. The strength and durability of traditional dental materials continue to make them useful for situations where restored teeth must withstand extreme forces that result from chewing, such as in the back of the mouth.
Newer dental fillings called composite resins are made of plastic compounds that mimic the appearance of natural teeth. These tooth-colored fillings are usually used on the front teeth where a natural appearance is important. They can be used on the back teeth as well depending on the location and extent of the tooth decay. Composite resins are usually more costly than the dental amalgams because they take longer to place.
Because composite resins look more natural than other filling materials, your child can smile, talk, and eat with confidence. Tooth-colored filings, however, are not suitable for every tooth. These are best used in low-stress areas or in small restorations. Dr. Yu may not recommend resins for a large cavity or for a chewing surface of a back tooth. Dr. Yu will make the final decision and offer other options of restorations.
Good oral hygiene is the best way to take care of any filling: brushing, flossing, and regular visits to your child’s dentist. Dr. Yu will regularly check the fillings for color change, leakage, or unusual wear and inform you of the need for repair or replacement.
